Amritsar, December 7

The number of victims of botched eye surgeries has reached 35 with one more villager reporting at Ram Lal Eye Hospital here today.

The doctors feared the number may go up as a total of 49 patients from the villages surrounding Gagomahal (near here) were operated upon during the camp at Ghuman in Gurdaspur.

The hospital today discharged 13 patients, citing the risk of infection from the critical cases. Those discharged have been told to come for regular follow-up. The hospital segregated another four patients, who had shown some improvement over the past 24 hours.

The hospital has put on hold the work of eye transplantation in view of the infection risk. The patients who had got their eyes transplanted and were under observation too have been discharged.

Associate Professor Dr Karanjit Singh said the condition of the patient who reported today was serious. He said they had advised him to get admitted. “But he refused while stating that he would come tomorrow,” said the doctor.
