Chandigarh, January 8

The BJP’s central election committee is expected to take a final call on the name of candidate for the Amritsar Lok Sabha byelection during its meeting on January 11.

Former state vice-president Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina is seen as the secular face of the party.

A former state president said: “Chhina is only the name recommended by the state election committee. The name of state vice-president Harjit Singh Grewal, who is close to state party chief Vijay Sampla, did come up during one of the earlier meetings. But he is now being considered for an Assembly seat”. Sources said the party could also consider the names of senior leaders Laxmi Kanta Chawla and Dr Baldev Raj Chawla.

AAP too in fray

“We will contest the bypoll and announce our candidate in a day or two,” AAP leader Sanjay Singh said.
