Shaheed Bhagat Singh’s grandnephew Abhitej Sandhu, who was injured in a motorbike accident at Maglad near Rampur in Shimla district late last evening, succumbed to his injuries in a Rampur hospital today.

Abhitej (27), son of Abhay Singh Sandhu and a resident of Mohali, was on his way back from Kaza on his motorcycle when it skidded. He sustained head and rib injuries.

Bikers Vijay Kumar and Nadeem stopped at the spot to pick him up. Meanwhile, other passengers stopped and extended help.

An injured Abhitej, who was conscious, complained of chest pain and told the people to contact his friends Gurprakash Singh, Abhitesh and a girl who were following him.

Then, Vijay informed his friends about the accident and told them to reach the civil hospital at Khenari in Rampur. The friends, in turn, informed Abhitej’s family members about the accident.

Sources said the biker was riding at high speed when he met with the accident. The Jhakri police have registered a case of rash driving under Sections 279 and 337 of the IPC. The body was handed over to his father after the post-mortem examination and taken to Mohali for the last rites that will take place tomorrow.

Sources said Abhitej was a youth leader of the Aam Aadmi Party and had been visiting Himachal along with senior leaders. He had also addressed some rallies in the state.

Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal mourned his death and tweeted: “May his soul rest in peace. Heartfelt condolences to his family members.”
