The beekeeping business is now picking up in Hamirpur district. It has become a means of livelihood for villagers.

The demand for honey is on the rise in the domestic market. Rakesh, a honey hunter from Galoo village, said honey was sold at Rs 500 to 600 per kg in the local market whereas it was priced at Rs 1,500 to 2,000 per kg in Punjab.

While building beehives, some of the hunters were reportedly stung by honeybees and were admitted to hospital. Last year, the region reported two deaths due to bee attacks.

Dr Narender Bhardwaj, Medical Officer, said sufficient anti-allergy medicines were available in hospitals in the district to treat patients.
