Chandigarh, August 30

In a major setback to the Gandhi Group Students Union (GGSU), that was part of the SOI alliance which won the Panjab University Campus Student Council (PUCSC) elections held on August 26, the student organisation has lost one of its mentors, Amritpal Bawa, who was shot in his hometown Muktsar last evening.

Bawa was a former GGSU president and was instrumental in cementing the base of the party on the Panjab University (PU) campus.

The GGSU, an alienated faction of SOPU, had emerged strongly in recent years with a large number of students showing their support to the budding student organisation.

The GGSU is also establishing its base in local colleges. Vikramjeet Singh Middukhera, president, SOI, Chandigarh, said Bawa was known for his decent behaviour who was never involved in any controversy. “I knew him for the past 15 years and was shocked to know that he has been shot dead,” he said. PUSU leader Tejinder Singh said, “It’s a major setback for us. He was a good human being and fine guide who always helped his friends.  Last year, he actively participated in the elections and never indulged in any controversy.”

“We will hold a candlelight march tomorrow evening in memory of Bawa.  He was an active member of the GGSU. His absence will be a big loss for the party as well as his friends,” said Jagraj Khaira, GGSU president.
