In an attempt to run cross-LoC trade on the Poonch-Rawlakote route smoothly and in a fair manner, the authorities have asked the traders to follow the barter trade norms and abstain from one-sided trade.
The PoJK traders had recently objected to those who were dealing in export from the Indian side and asked the Indian trade authorities to allow only those traders who dealt in import and export.
PoJK traders had returned 25 trucks loaded with fresh fruit on January 20 alleging that some traders from the Indian side had left the trade without clearing their previous balance. Later, trade union leaders from both sides had held a meeting at Chakan da Bagh and ended the stalemate.
“As it is a barter system and traders have to export as well as import something and if he/she fails to follow the guidelines he/she will not be allowed from now onwards,” said Tanveer Ahmed, Custodian, cross-LoC trade, Chakan da Bagh, Poonch.
Sources in the trade centre said, “There are over 303 registered traders in Poonch, but some traders deal either in export or import. As per the barter system, they have to import as well as export.”
The sources said the trade authorities had been working to find out the traders who had not cleared their balance.
Pawan Anand, president, cross-LoC traders, said, “Trade should be based on demand and supply. Now we have been sending fresh fruits, but are unable to import dry fruits from PoJK which are costlier now.” “The import and export transactions of traders should be checked or recorded quarterly, not on a weekly or monthly basis. At present, we are sending fresh fruits and will import apple and kinnos in the coming two or three months. Items should also be included in the agreed list so that import and export go simultaneously,” Anand said.
Besides, the trade authorities have allowed only a few items out of the 21 items. Traders of both sides have been demanding a review of the list.
