Badal Sworn In As Chief Minister

CHANDIGARH, June 20, - Mr Parkash Singh Badal, former Union Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation, was this morning sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Punjab.

CHANDIGARH, June 20, - Mr Parkash Singh Badal, former Union Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation, was this morning sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Punjab. The Governor, Mr. M.M. Chaudhury, administered the oath of office and secrecy, on the sprawling and lush-green lawns of Raj Bhavan, Mr. Badal took the oath in Punjabi.

Slogans of “Sher-e-Punjab” Parkash Singh Badal” and “Sat Sri Akal” rent the air when Mr. Badal, accompanied by Mr. Gurcharan Singh Tohra, President of the SGPC, and Mr. Jagdev Singh Talwandi, President of the Akali Dal, came to the venue.

Earlier, Mr. Hardev Singh Chhina, Chief Secretary to the Punjab Government, read the order of the Acting President of India revoking President’s rule in the State.

A large number of people came in buses and trucks from all over the Punjab. Those present included judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, senior officers of the Punjab Government, led by Mr. R.S. Talwar, Adviser to the Governor during the President’s rule. Mr. S.D. Bhambri, Chief Secretary to the Haryana Government, and a large number of women.

Public men present included Mr. Yagya Dutt Sharma, MP, Mr. Brish Bhan, Mrs Amarjit Kaur, Congress MP, Dr. Kewal Krishan, Speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, Mr. Harchand Singh Longowal, and Mr. Lachhman Singh MLA (Kalka).
