Auto driver loots Rs 2 lakh from passenger

An auto-rickshaw driver looted a passenger of Rs 2 lakh. The victim has been identified as Abhay Kumar, a resident of Gobindgarh, Jalandhar.

Abhay said he boarded an auto-rickshaw from Rekhi chowk for Bhai Wala chowk but the driver stopped the vehicle on the way near City Centre mall over some technical snag.

After some time, the driver headed towards Bhai Wala chowk but again stopped the auto-rickshaw midway saying that he could not go forward due to some technical problem in the vehicle.

“When the auto-rickshaw left, I was stunned to notice that Rs 2 lakh kept in my pocket was missing. The driver had escaped hurriedly. I could not notice the number plate,” he said.

He lodged a complaint at the police division no 1.

This is not the first incident when a passenger was looted by an auto-rickshaw driver.

Earlier too, some cases had come to the fore in which passengers were looted of their money by auto-rickshaw drivers.

Sources said there was a gang of auto-rickshaw drivers, which had been targeting passengers.

Jharkhand man nabbed with opium

The government railway police nabbed a resident of Jharkhand and recovered 2.5 kg opium from his possession. The accused has been identified as Ranjit Kumar. The GRP SHO said during a routine checking near the railway station, the accused was stopped.  During a search of his belongings, narcotics were recovered, he added.  The accused told the police that he had brought the consignment from Jharkhand and had to deliver it to his clients in the city.  Apart from this, the police also recovered an abandoned bag from the railway station platform and recovered 10 kg poppy husk.  A probe is on to enquire about the person who abandoned the bag.

Woman among 3 held with drugs

The Haibowal police nabbed three persons, including a woman, and recovered drugs from their possession.  The accused have been identified as Kamaljit Singh of Haibowal Khurd, Bunty Kumar of Shahi Mohalla and Surjit Kaur of Pavitar Nagar.  ASI Manjit Singh said the accused were nabbed near Salem Tabri area when they were on their way to supply drugs. As much as 220 gram charas was recovered from their possession.

Youth goes missing

A 21-year-old youth went missing from a hospital where he was working. Complainant Babu Ram of Vijay Nagar told the police that his son was working in a cancer hospital.  On March 18, the youth went to the hospital but did not return home.  Babu Ram suspected that his son could have been kept in illegal confinement by some unknown persons.  A case against unknown person has been registered.

Two nabbed on illegal mining charge

Two persons were nabbed for illegal mining in different cases. In the first case, the Ladowal police nabbed a Gurdeep Singh, a resident of Talwandi Kalan village, for illegal mining.  The police said acting on a tip-off, a naka was laid near Kadian Bhatia village. As they intercepted a tractor-trailer laden with sand for checking, the driver failed to produce any document pertaining to the sand loaded in the vehicle. In the second case, the police nabbed Ismayal Khan of Kumkalan from Ramgarh area. He also had sand loaded in a tractor-trailer. A case has been registered under the Mining Act in both cases. In another case, the Meharban police impounded a tractor-trailer laden with illegally mined sand from near Boothgarh village. However, the driver managed to escape.

Drug peddler held with drugs

The Kumkalan police nabbed a drug peddler and recovered 60 kg poppy husk and 150 gm opium from his possession.  The accused has been identified as Kabal Singh, a resident of Kot Gangu village.  The police said a tip-off was received and accordingly a raid was conducted at his residence.

Octogenarian killed in road accident

An 80-year-old woman was killed after she was hit by a rashly driven motorcycle on Tuesday at Mundian Kalan. The deceased has been identified as Parkash Kaur, a resident of Mundian Kalan.  Complainant Surjit Singh told the police that her mother had gone to pay obeisance at a gurdwara, but on the way, she was hit by a bike.  The motorcyclist fled from the spot after the accident. The woman sustained severe head injuries due to which she died on the spot. The police have been scanning the CCTV footage to identify the biker. A case under Section 304A of the IPC has been registered against the unknown motorcyclist.
