Asian debate trophy goes to Sherwood College

Sherwood College, Nainital bagged the 15th Asian Challenge debate competition organised by The Asian School here yesterday.

They won the Rolling Trophy and a cash prize of Rs 5,000.

The St Joseph’s Academy (SJA) team emerged as the the first runners-up. The other participants from The Aryan School, Ann Mary School, Wynberg Allen, Summer Valley, Ecole Globale International Girls’ School, Welham Girls’ School, St George’s College, Convent of Jesus and Mary School, The Asian School and Heritage School spoke brilliantly for and against the proposition – “Visual media nowadays is completely a ‘Farce’. The news shown on TV is more of a verbal duel on the TV channels than statements of actual facts, on the news of the nation and the world.”

The event was adjudged by Dr Nighat Shamsi, an eminent educationist, Era Chauhan, a freelance journalist and Shivani Patnaik, Asst Professor Chemistry, Petroleum University. The results of this Inter-School Debate were as follows: Best Speaker (For) — Siddharth Bedi — The Asian School, Dehradun, Best Speaker (Against) — Apoorv Gaurav — Sherwood College, Nainital, Best Rebuttal (For) — Siddharth Bedi — The Asian School, Dehradun, Best Rebuttal (Against) — Apoorv Gaurav — Sherwood College, Nainital, Best Team — Sherwood College, Nainital.

Earlier, chief guest Madanjeet Singh, the vice president of The Asian School, AK Das, the principal of The Asian School and the judges lit the lamp and gave this occasion an auspicious beginning. Speaking on the occasion, AK Das, the principal of the Asian School, congratulated the winners and said the topic was quite exciting and was eloquently dealt with by the students and the debate was a combination of preparation and extempore. He gave away the prizes to the winners.
