Chandigarh, February 16

For the first time, Chandigarh Architecture College has been requested to repair the heritage furniture designed by Le Corbusier lying at the Postgraduate Government College (PGGC) of Sector 11, Chandigarh.

In a communication to Architecture college by PGGC College on January 18, Architecture college has been requested to repair 20 heritage chairs lying in the store in a bad condition. The college authorities are keen on getting these repaired by the experts of Architecture college so that these could be preserved in a proper manner.

Chandigarh Architecture College principal Pardeep Bhagat confirmed that they had received a communication from the college. He said they were planning to visit the college in the near future to see the condition of the chairs and see whether these could be repaired in the college workshop or not. The college will also prepare the estimate of repair work of heritage furniture and inform the college authorities accordingly.

He said Architecture college had also sent a request to the Human Resource Development Ministry to revive the post of the college carpenter which had been discontinued for a long time. This will help the college in assisting the city education institutes that have heritage furniture to repair and maintain these properly, he added.

Sources said in the Chandigarh Heritage Conservation Committee meeting which is scheduled for February 18, a proposal will be mooted by members that a survey should be conducted in all the educational institutes where the heritage furniture was lying to know its condition and get these repaired for their better upkeep.

Recently, after the theft of heritage items from the Government College of Art, Sector 10, Chandigarh, the Administration had constituted a Heritage Items Protection Cell, which would work under the supervision of the Chandigarh Heritage Conservation Committee and formulate a methodology to protect and conserve Chandigarh’s heritage furniture and other items.
