Hisar, April 26

Another farmer committed suicide by hanging himself in Ugalan village in Narnaund block of the district last night.

The deceased, Krishan Kumar, ended his life by hanging himself from a tree when he got an extremely low yield from a two-acre field during harvesting of the wheat crop by a combine harvester .

The farmer’s son, Ajit Kumar, informed the police that after harvesting the crop from four acres, he found that the yield was just about two quintals. While the combine harvester operator was busy doing his work, his father hanged himself. After the combine harvester driver spotted Krishan Kumar hanging from a tree, he informed the victim’s family and the police.

The victim’s son said they owned 17 acres and had taken another 40 acres on lease but the extensive damage to the rabi crops due to inclement weather had landed them in deep trouble.

Jitender Singh, another village farmer, told The Tribune that crops in the region comprising many villages had suffered heavy damage due to the unseasonal rain. “The major concern of farmers is how to feed their families”, he said.

Many farmers in the region allege that officials are not visiting the farms to carry out a survey. The farmers in Depal, Depal Majra, Mamanpura destroyed their crops in about 70 acres in the villages during the last two days. Bhale Ram, Jang Bahadur, Shyam, Inder Singh, Ramchander, Ram Singh, Mahender, Om Prakash, Sube Singh, Narender Malik and others said they had complained to the district authorities in writing demanding survey of the affected crops but no official had so far visited their fields.

“We have no option but to destroy the crops to prepare the land for the kharif crop”, said Om Prakash.
