Amritsar, July 15

The high-security Amritsar Central Jail will soon be relocated to a multi-storeyed premises on the Fatehpur-Jhabbal road.

The new premises was today handed over to the Jail Department, which organised ‘paath’ of Sukhmani Sahib and ‘havan’ before deputing its security staff. Senior jail officials inspected the barracks, the administrative block, sewerage and other infrastructure. Jail Superintendent Paramjit Singh Sandhu said it would take at least another month to shift to the new jail, the foundation stone of which was laid in September 2013 by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal.

Sandhu said, “About 55 per cent of the inmates have criminal cases registered in Tarn Taran. They will be shifted to a jail under construction at Goindwal Sahib.”

The new jail will have eight double-storeyed blocks for men and two for women prisoners. The new compound houses the Jail Superintendent’s residence, spread over an area of 2,275 sq ft. Seven units of 1,000 sq ft each have been built for deputy superintendents, besides 14 houses (750 sq ft each) for Class III staffers and 60 of 600 sq ft each for Class IV employees. A four-storeyed block will accommodate jail wardens.
