The police today claimed to have solved the mysterious murder case of a 21-year-old woman, whose body was recovered from Nowgam on the outskirts of Srinagar on Thursday evening.

Senior Superintendent of Police Tejinder Singh, while presenting the accused, Zahoor Ahmad, a resident of Kuzar village in the Chadoora area of Budgam district, before the media this afternoon, said the accused had confessed to killing of the woman after abducting her.

The police said Zahoor Ahmad had not revealed to them how he killed her and were waiting for details from the autopsy report.

The victim was working in a private company at Wukhoo. “She was waiting for a bus to reach home when Zahoor came driving a tipper and called her name loudly offering her lift,” said Tejinder Singh.

The police said Zahoor’s intention might have changed once the victim got into the tipper and he might have tried to sexually assault her, which she would have resisted.

Sources said Zahoor strangled the woman to death and then dragged her body out of the vehicle and buried her near a water body in Nowgam.

The parents of the victim, who had been missing since November 26, had filed a complaint at the Kakapora police station.

“We were having no clue except that a tipper driver had given lift to her. We launched an investigation and started questioning various tipper drivers of the Kakapora area and during the questioning Zahoor came on the police radar, who after interrogation confessed that he had killed the 21-year-old,” said the SSP.
