Chandigarh, December 7

The UT Administartion is planning to start Aadhaar-enabled payments on a pilot basis at the fruits and vegetable market in Sector 26.

Ajit Balaji Joshi, Deputy Commissioner, Chandigarh, who is also the nodal officer for the campaign, said they were in contact with banks over the issue. He said under the project, a common mobile phone app would be used by shopkeepers and vendors for receiving Aadhaar-enabled payments.

Customers will have to first go for biometric authentication before using the app. Joshi said people could link their Aadhaar details with their bank accounts and use the system for fund transfer. They just need to quote their Aadhaar number and authenticate it through a thumb impression or iris scan. This way, money will be directly transferred from the customer’s account to that of merchant’s. He said the app would be useful for the small vendors, who are facing cash crunch after the demonetisation of high value currency.

The DC said to spread awareness regarding the facility, an awareness camps would be organised. Meanwhile, the Administration has decided to start a drive to spread awareness on modes of e-transaction. Sources said the Administration had placed a demand for 1,000 swipe card machines for its varisous offices.
