A court here today sentenced two persons to life imprisonment  in a petrol station acid attack case that took place near Mohali about four years ago.

The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge (Senior Division) Parminder Pal Singh pronounced the judgment and sentenced Hardeep Singh, alias Deepa, and Jagwant Singh Bittu, residents of Desumajra, to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5 lakh each.

The two accused had thrown acid on Rakesh Rekhi, managing director of Rudraksh Group, and two girl staff members  of the group, Shivatika and Shefali. The three of them were sitting in a car, which had stopped at the petrol station near Daon village on the National Highway 21 for a refill.

The two accused came on a motorcycle and threw acid on the three persons in the car on September 1, 2011. They fled after committing the crime.

All three were injured in the attack. Shivatika, who was critically injured, succumbed to her injuries after 19 days at the PGI, Chandigarh.

A case had been registered at the Balongi police station against the two attackers under Sections 307 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). After Shivatika’s death, the case was converted to Section 302 of the IPC.

The two convicts  were taken to jail under tight security after the judgment was delivered.
