The Chandigarh Police were left red-faced when snatchers made their way after snatching a gold chain from an 80-year-old woman on her doorstep in Sector 44 after ringing the doorbell this morning. The spurt in snatching incidents has exposed the failure of the UT police in curbing such incidents.

The elderly couple stays alone in Sector 44. At around 9.45 am, the victim, Balwant Kaur, went to the door when someone rang the doorbell.

When the victim opened the door and came out, the youth who was already present there snatched her gold chain and sat on the rear seat of a motorcycle parked near the house on which his accomplice was waiting and fled from the spot.

The victim raised the alarm; but the accused had  managed to flee.

This is the second snatching incident reported in Sector 44 within three days.

Sources said a driver of a neighbor tried to chase the accused, however, he failed. The registration number of the motorcycle could not be noted down.  The police was informed about the incident following which a team of Sector 34 police station and a team of the crime branch arrived at the spot to investigate the matter.

Police teams are trying to locate CCTV cameras installed near the house so that the accused could be traced.

The local residents of sector 44 claimed that they have hardly seen the police party patrolling in the sector from where a majority of snatchings have been reported.

Sources said black Pulsar motorcycles and Honda Activa scooters were used in the snatching incidents reported in the past.
