Chandigarh, March 24

Approximately 8,500 stray dogs have been sterilised in the last two years after the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation launched a programme for the sterilisation and vaccination of stray dogs.

Sources in the MC informed that the Municipal Corporation had given the responsibility of carrying out sterilisation of stray dogs to Pune-based NGO, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), two years ago, which helped in curbing the population of  stray dogs in the city. An officer of the MC said now, the MC had floated a fresh tender to hire a new agency for carrying out the work as the contract with the existing agency was ending next month. He said the agency had been sterilising average 450 dogs in a month. — TNS
