The desire to get back his girlfriend who had left him due to his poverty led 25-year-old Suresh Kumar, a resident of Kishangarh, kidnap his neighbour’s four-year-old son on the night of January 25 and demand ransom.

The Chandigarh Police recovered the child and arrested the accused from the Ambala railway station after he was pressured by the police to return from Uttar Pradesh. ASP (East) Parvinder Singh said the accused, Suresh Kumar (25), a resident of Kishangarh and neighbour of the victim, kidnapped Ajay from outside the house while he was playing. “Other children were also playing with the victim, who saw Suresh take away the child,” the ASP said.

The accused was staying at Kishangarh for the past around three years and used to give sweets to the children in the area. On the day of the incident, the accused lured the child with sweets and took him along. Police sources said the accused had an affair with a woman for the past seven years, who left him around 20 days ago due to his inability to earn money. “The accused planned to demand a ransom from the family. However, before he could do so, the police developed contact with him and pressured him to return.

The accused hails from Bareli in UP. The accused was arrested on the night of January 26 from the railway station. He was produced in court, which remanded him in judicial custody.
