4 killed, 1 hurt as car falls into gorge

Four students were killed and one another was critically injured when the Alto car they were travelling in fell into a 50-60-foot gorge in the Ashwani Khud near Solan this afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Kartik Kaundal (16), a resident of Nauni village, Rohit Kumar (23), a resident of Chail and Tanish Thakur and Sanjay Kumar ( 21), both residents of Oachghat village. Manoj Kumar (20), who also hailed from Oachghat village, was critically injured and referred to the PGI, Chandigarh, after preliminary treatment at the Regional Hospital, Solan. The victims were studying in different educational institutes and had gone to celebrate the birthday of their friend when the mishap took place.

Police officials said the car had fallen into a 50-60-foot gorge and only the mangled remains of the vehicle were found. The police said they could not ascertain whether the driver was drunk when the accident took place and this would only be confirmed from the blood test reports of the victims.

Man killed in road mishap

Mandi: A man was killed in a road accident last evening when a truck collided with a jeep on the Mandi-Kullu national highway near Pandoh in Mandi. The deceased was identified as Tarun Kumar (32), a native of Mandi.

According to the police, the jeep was on its way towards Kullu from Mandi side and collided with a truck. Jeep driver Tarun Kumar died on the spot while the truck driver fled the scene. The police have registered a case under Sections 279 and 304A of the IPC and further investigation is underway.
