Karnal, January 9

Nearly 29 government primary schools in the district are on the verge of closure due to poor enrolment of students.

Sources said that 35 schools with less than 25 students in the current academic session were identified. Of these schools, six had already been closed, while the remaining schools were on the brink of closure, they said.

The sources said of the 29 schools, two were in the Karnal block, eight in Indri block, seven in Nilokheri, six in Assandh, two in Gharaunda and four in Nissing block.

Seven schools located at Rukanpur, Nalvi Khurd, Galib Kheri, Rajgarh, Nabiyabad, Ramgarh and Indergarh were merged with other schools following poor strength of the students last year, they said.

A teacher said that the education standard in the government schools was at its low and even government teachers do not send their children to the government schools.

District Elementary Education Officer (DEEO) Saroj Gur said that the government had asked them about the schools with less number of students. Following the instructions, they had identified some schools, she said.

Managements had been asked to increase their strength otherwise these schools would be shut down and students would be shifted to nearby schools, she added.
