Rewari, December 22

A group of cow smugglers fired at the police when the latter tried to nab them at a naka set up in Dhaaruhera Industrial Town of this district today. The policemen had a miraculous escape, but smugglers managed to escape due to heavy fog.

Investigation officer Hansraj, said, “We had got a tip-off last evening that cattle were being taken in a truck for slaughtering from Rajasthan to Delhi via Dhaaruhera town, after which we set up a naka at the Bhiwadi-Dhaaruhera border.”

He said some occupants in a truck attacked the policemen and opened fire when the cops tried to stop the truck for checking. Fortunately, the cops did not suffer any injury in the assault. The policemen tried to nab the assailants, but the fled, courtesy the fog in the area.

“The assailants fled and left the truck on the spot. As many as 25 cows were off-loaded from the truck when the policemen checked it after the assault,” said Hansraj. He maintained all cows were later sent to a cowshed in Rewari for treatment. A case of attempt to murder under the Arms Act was booked against unidentified persons. — TNS
