New Delhi, January 30

Police has nabbed ‘drug lord’ Sharafat Sheikh (53) —  known in the drug world for three decades — from Nizamuddin, his area of operation. From a street hawker to a scrap dealer, then graduating to a drug lord to finally as the receiver of stolen properties, Sheikh is involved in 37 criminal cases including NSA and MCOCA.

His close aid, Pappu alias Kana alia Tabrez (33), resident of Basti Nizamuddin, and Piyush Verma (23), resident of Railway Colony, have also been arrested. From their possession, three stolen motorcycles and 18 mobile phones have been recovered, said DCP Chinmoy Biswal.

On Jan 25, during checking at Barapulla Flyover picket, Verma was seen coming on a scooty from Mathura Road side and was going towards Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station. When stopped for checking and asked to produce ownership documents of the scooty, the rider could not produce any and kept making excuses. On enquiry, the said scooty was found stolen. When arrested, Verma disclosed that he is a BCA graduate, but became addicted to drugs and liquor and to meet his needs, he started stealing motorcycles and mobiles from Nizamuddin and sold them to Pappu.

On his instance, Pappu was arrested from Basti Hazrat Nizamuddin. Accused Pappu disclosed that he was working for Sheikh and after purchasing the stolen motorcycles and mobiles from the drug addicts, he used to handover thm to Sheikh, who further gave these vehicles to drug peddlers so that they can leave them and ran away, in case of any apprehension of arrest, he said.

On his instance, raid was conducted at Sheikh’s residence and 18 mobile phones that he had received from the drug addicts through Pappu have been recovered, the DCP added. — TNS
