New Delhi, September 19

The Supreme Court today issued a contempt notice to Delhi chief of BJP Manoj Tiwari, on a court-appointed monitoring committee’s report accusing him of breaking the seal of a building sealed by a civic body in the capital.

A three-judge Bench headed by Justice Madan B Lokur asked Tiwari to appear before it on September 25.

The Bench, also comprising Justice S Abdul Nazeer and Justice Deepak Gupta, said it was “unfortunate” that an elected representative had tried to defy the Supreme Court’s orders. It reflected a “disturbing state of affairs” as allegations against Tiwari were that he had broken the seal of premises sealed by the EDMC, the Bench said after perusing the report.

Amicus curiae Ranjit Kumar placed the committee report before the Bench and said a video of the alleged incident was also annexed with it. He said an FIR was lodged against Tiwari and others on the basis of a complaint by the EDMC. — TNS
