New Delhi, February 11

The government today decided to hire a consultant for exploring the feasibility of supplying water 24 hours to residents and checking water theft happening due to unauthorised water connections in the city, said a spokesperson for AAP.

Consultants would suggest creation of district metered areas to improve water distribution network, achieving better water-pressure management, less contamination, less leakages, etc.

This, on the one hand, will augment the capital’s water supply, and on the other, will go on to reduce non-revenue water connections, which are as high as 47 per cent Delhi.

The decision was taken in a meeting of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), chaired by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

The board approved several measures of public good in its 144th board meeting. Presently, the total water supply of the DJB is about 900 MGD through approximately 14,000 km of transmission and distribution network.

“Looking various projects being undertaken and approved by the board in recent times, the board today approved the hiring of a consultant to study the possibility of 24-hour water supply,” said a government official.

The board also extended the deadline for regularisation of domestic/commercial unauthorised water connection till June 30 at Rs 500 for domestic connection and Rs 1,500 under the commercial/industrial purposes. Till the same date the scheme of levy/recovery of development charges of water and sewer too has been extended.

An amount of Rs 30 crore has been sanctioned for rejuvenation of defunct oxidation pond at Timarpur. — TNS
