New Delhi, August 18

South Delhi Mayor Kamaljeet Sehrawat and Divisional Railway Manager, Northern Railway, R. N. Singh today jointly flagged off the mosquito terminator train from New Delhi Railway Station.

The running of this special train during the monsoon period or after the heavy rains is considered best to prevent the high-breeding cycle of the larva of these ecto-parasites and thus tackle outbreak of vector-borne diseases, a spokesperson of the Northern Railway said.

As per schedule, there will be four rounds of spraying in an interval of two weeks. The mosquito terminator train will cover 100 km in two days in the peak mosquito season. The train carrying the terminator will pass through Sarai Rohilla, Patel Nagar, Delhi Cantonment, Palam, Safdarjung, Kishanganj, Lajpat Nagar, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Adarsh Nagar, Rathdhana, Shahdara, Palam and Gurgaon, he said.

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation has provided a truck-mounted power sprayer to railways which sprays insecticide in water bodies around tracks. The insecticide sprayed over the water bodies would check the incidence of mosquito breeding alongside tracks where a large number resides.

The water bodies formed on the land adjacent to the tracks, which is otherwise inaccessible can be tackled effectively in this manner.

The sprayers have potency to sanitize from a distance of 50-60 meters from the tracks therefore making it possible to cover large and inaccessible areas in a short span of time.

The terminator train will take this truck on tracks in the city area at a slow speed of 20 km per hour.
