India has messy urbanisation resulting in slum clusters have come up in most of the cities. At present the country has 34 per cent urbanisation but very soon it will reach at 50 per cent as most of the people from rural areas are migrating towards cities in search of better life style.

This was said by experts at a two-day workshop of UN-Habitat media capacity building on new urban areas. The workshop was organised to address the challenges of urbanisation in context of UN’s new urban agenda endorsed by the UN General Assembly in December 2016.

Urban local bodies are concentrating for affordable housing and those who are interested in the housing need banks assistance. The authorities concerned should care for rate of interest, affordability and helping the poor in increasing their income. While constructing new housing, the authorities concerned should also look for public spaces. The developer should take care of people’s need.

Another expert said the government system is rigid. It does not want a change in design of affordable housing. Instead of developing housing, the authorities concerned should allot land to people who can design houses according to their needs. Women of this category work outside as well as they have responsibility of their children also. The affordable houses should be built keeping in view people’s work places.

They said during Commonwealth Games – 2010, slums were shifted from far off places where the dwellers had nothing to work.
