New Delhi, June 1

Observing that a huge solar power potential lies untapped in the Capital, Lt Governor Anil Baijal today directed the city’s Power Department to develop a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to guide various government departments and potential large users on installation of solar panels.

Baijal also asked the Secretary (Power) to prepare a roadmap in coordination with the other departments for installation of solar panels on the rooftop of government buildings, courts, prisons, malls, schools, hospitals, etc..

The objective is to achieve the target of 1 GW by 2020 and 2 GW by 2025 as mandated, the Lt Governor said during a meeting that he chaired on solar power generation.

Further stressing the need to create awareness, Baijal suggested that the discoms should spread awareness in consumers about the long-term benefits of solar power and the government incentives for its generation.

Pamphlets enumerating all the advantages of solar power, incentives available from the government for its adoption may be distributed by the discoms, he said.

This will help Delhi achieve its huge potential with considerable ease and benefits to all, said Baijal while adding that renewable energy is the future and a strong antidote to air pollution.

Delhi is a landlocked state, and almost 300 sunny days and sufficient rooftop space is available for installation of Solar PV systems. Delhi has a huge potential of 2500 MWp (annual generation approx. 3,500 million kWh) solar energy.
