Dancer turned criminal arrested for snatching from auto-rickshaw driver

A dancer turned snatcher was chased and caught by ‘Raftar’ patrolling squad at midnight at Govindpuri.

Snatcher Rohan Gill (21), a resident of Govindpuri, who was caught red-handed while he was fleeing after snatching money from an auto-rickshaw driver. The snatched purse of the auto-driver and a stolen mobile has been recovered, said police.

On November 14 at midnight, an auto-rickshaw driver, Rahul, resident of Madanpur Khadar, while waiting in his auto for passenger at Govindpuri Chowk at Ravi Dass Marg, was counting his cash, when a boy came to him and asked for bidi. Complainant gave him bidi and while he continued counting, the boy allegedly snatched his purse and ran way, they said.

Complainant raised alarm for help and nearby newly inducted ‘Raftar’ motorcycle patrolling squad beat staff of Govindpuri chased the accused. After a hot chase, the squad managed to apprehend the accused. A snatched purse containing Rs 1,900 was recovered from his possession, said DCP Chinmoy BIswal.

During sustained interrogation, accused disclosed that he had studied and remained in a hostel in Agra, UP. He was not much interested in studies and after schooling, he returned to his home here. His father works as a driver. Accused joined a Dance Academy in Kalkaji and completed a one-year professional dance training course. He joined a dance troupe and soon became the lead performer of his troupe. He started performing in events and parties, the DCP said.

Accused further disclosed that he has three girlfriends. In order to splurge on them and to get easy money for his expenses, he started petty thefts and snatching in the area, he said.

With the arrest of the accused, 12 cases of thefts and snatchings in Govindpuri have been solved and a stolen mobile phone has also been recovered on his instance, the DCP added.
