New Delhi, September 16

A six-year-old boy was allegedly strangulated and then his body was hanged from a tree at a secluded area in south Delhi's Dhaula Kuan area, the police said today.

The police suspect that he might have been sexually assaulted. The boy had been missing since Tuesday evening and a case of abduction was registered at the South Campus police station in connection with the incident, according to the police.

The boy's semi-nude body was discovered at 11.45 am today when a passer-by saw it hanging from a tree and informed the police. The boy's limbs were tied with a rope, according to the police.

A police team rushed the boy to hospital where he was declared dead. The police began its investigation into the case and sent a message about the body to all the police stations in Delhi to ascertain his identity. The police learnt that a boy of a similar age had reportedly been missing from a slum at Delhi University's South Campus area since Tuesday evening. The boy's parents later identified his body.

According to the police, the boy was allegedly strangulated during the early hours of today. They suspect that he was first sexually assaulted, having examined the condition of his clothes and other evidence. He was then hanged from a tree by a rope.

The body has been sent for a postmortem and the report will ascertain the cause and timing of the boy's death, according to the police.
