New Delhi, May 6

A five-storey building collapsed in Inderpuri, West Delhi, this morning leaving, at least, five persons severely injured, said a Delhi Police official.

No deaths have been reported in the incident till now, according to the Delhi Police. After the incident, the authorities concerned were rushed to the spot in order to carry out rescue operations for the people stuck in the building. Reports suggest that the cause behind the collapse is the use of low-grade construction material and poor maintenance.

The building, which is located in a narrow lane, was seen resting dangerously over the other buildings situated beside it causing threat to them also.

According to a local RWA member of the locality, “The building was built in 25 square yards, which is an insufficient space for such a high construction. This was not the only building, there are numerous buildings in the vicinity which are constructed on such small piece of land. People here grease the palms of municipality and police officials and do illegal constructions and the result is this. Luckily no one got killed in this incident. There should be an inquiry setup into the matter as to how the permission was granted to build five-storey on such this small area.”

It is likely that the municipal corporation soon is going to set up an inquiry regarding the building collapsed and unearth the people who gave permission to construct this building, according to a senior official of the West Delhi Municipal Corporation.
