Zirakpur, August 17

Vehicular traffic was thrown out of gear after rain lashed the town for nearly an hour on Friday morning. Commuters were put to great hardship as vehicles moved at a snail’s pace and policemen struggled to clear the bottlenecks.

Traffic jams were witnessed on almost all main routes with vehicles stranded for hours.

According to sources, traffic on the busy Zirakpur-Patiala road and the Zirakpur-Chandigarh stretch was severely affected due to rain with waterlogging contributing to chaos at various intersections.

The low-lying areas of Zirakpur such as Baltana were severely affected. Waterlogging was witnessed under the flyover in the absence of any proper drainage.

Traffic gridlocks were also witnessed on the Zirakpur-Panchkula stretch near the K-area. The worst affected was the Patiala-Zirakpur stretch where vehicles remained stuck bumber-to-bumper for over an hour, leaving people stranded on the roads and exposing the traffic management system.

The unpreparedness of the Municipal Council to deal with inclement weather has been exposed more than once during the monsoon.
