Gangster Sampat Nehra was handed over to the Zirakpur police on a production warrant today. The Dera Bassi police produced the gangster before the court of Judicial Magistrate (Senior Division) Balwinder Kaur Dhaliwal after his five-day remand ended on Saturday. The police did not seek extension in remand.

The Zirakpur police had wanted to interrogate him in connection with FIR No. 430 (murder attempt). The Zirakpur police secured a two-day remand of Nehra. He was also taken to the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, for a medical check-up.

Nehra, son of a retired Assistant Sub-Inspector of the Chandigarh Police, was nabbed by a special task force (STF) of the Haryana Police from Hyderabad on June 6.

The Dera Bassi police said during investigation, Nehra confessed that he, along with his two accomplices, had fired at Manjit Singh, a resident of Chandiala village, and took away his Swift car.

Sampat, a resident of Churu district in Rajasthan, has been leading the Lawrence Bishnoi gang since the arrest of it leader in cases of extortion.

Attempt-to-murder charge against him

According to FIR No. 430, registered on December 30, 2016, Satwinder Singh, a resident of Banur, and his associate Kulwant Singh, a resident of Adda Juggiyan village, had a miraculous escape when a group of youths allegedly fired at them. Satwinder Singh had told the police that Sampat Nehra, along with his three accomplices, fired at them indiscriminately. The police also recovered an empty shell from the site of the attack.
