A 28-year-old youth suffered a bullet injury on his back after a man opened fire at him on the Court road reportedly over an old dispute in Ambala city today.

The victim has been identified as Mahender, a resident of Dera Bassi, while the suspect has been identified as Manoj Nain, a resident of Jind.

The victim was rushed to the Civil Hospital, Ambala City, from where he was referred to the GMCH-32 in Chandigarh.

After getting information, Superintendent of Police Mohit Handa and Deputy Superintendent of Police Sultan Singh also reached the spot.

According to information, Mahender, along with some of his friends, came here to celebrate the birthday of one of their friends and have some food at an eatery on the Court road where a verbal spat broke out between them following which Manoj opened fire at Mahender.

After opening fire, the suspect managed to flee from the spot. It is being said that the victim and the suspect are said to be history-sheeters and have a monetary dispute.

Sources said people involved in this incident belong to some gangs and an old rivalry led to the incident. However, the police were yet to make any disclosure in this context.

Ajit Singh, SHO, Ambala City, said: “The injured person has been referred to Chandigarh for further treatment. The matter is being investigated. We are yet to record the victim’s statement.”

DSP Sultan Singh said: “There were three to four friends and they were having food. Meanwhile, a verbal spat broke out between them and one of them opened fire at Mahender. CCTV footage has been obtained. No such information about their criminal background has come to the notice so far, but the matter is being investigated. The exact reason behind the incident is yet to be ascertained. The suspect has been identified and he will be nabbed soon.”
