Chandigarh, September 17

A local court sentenced a 21-year-old youth to 15 years in jail for raping a two-and-a-half-year-old baby girl. Uma Nath, a resident of Bhaderi village in Sector 41, was convicted under Section 6 of the POCSO Act and fined Rs 1.05 lakh. The court judgment observed that while young girls were considered goddesses, the youth chose to take advantage of her vulnerability.

On February 22 this year, a case was registered on the basis of a complaint filed by the victim’s mother. Uma Nath, who lived in the same house for the past five years, took the girl to the second floor of the house on the pretext of providing toffees and money.

He then took her to the rooftop and committed the crime following which she began crying loudly. However, by the time the victim’s mother reached the roof, the convict had fled from the spot. The police were informed, who took the girl to a hospital where a medical examination confirmed rape. A formal case was then registered and Uma Nath was arrested later.

The Judge observed that given the age difference, the convict should have actually been a fatherly figure for the minor. It added, “…instead of protecting her, he tried to satisfy his lust with such a small girl, who is considered a goddess in Indian society.”
