Yale varsity Prof is ‘Distinguished Medical Scientist’ at PGIMER

Dr Vinetz Joseph, Professor of Medicine, Section of Infectious Medicine, School of Medicine, Yale University, has been appointed as the “Distinguished Medical Scientist” for the Prof PN Chhuttani Chair” at the PGIMER.

Dr Joseph is also a research professor in the Faculty of Lima, Peru. His research in global health and infectious diseases is problem-based and applies fundamental laboratory approaches. He tries to bring cutting-edge science to enable infectious disease control and elimination, with particular focuses on malaria, brucella and leptospirosis, the three diseases also endemic in India.

Earlier, he emphasised the need to develop good hypothesis to plan successful research protocol in infectious disease. He also had a long discussion with PGI Director Prof Jagat Ram.

It was decided that he would help the PGI in developing infectious disease super-speciality course. The course would be run jointly by the internal medicine and microbiology departments.

Like Lima programme, he would help in developing a community-based tropical disease programme for the PGI.

The PGI and Dr Joseph will jointly explore the possibility of exchange programmes with Yale University, US, to train students in tropical and infectious diseases.
