A woman, believed to be in her mid-30s, kidnapped a 15-day-old boy from Azad Nagar at Balongi here.

The kidnapper, who is seen taking away the baby in CCTV footage, befooled the parents by posing as a health worker.

Qasim, father of the baby, said the woman had come to their house eight days ago. “She told us that she was a health worker and had come to administer polio drops. After giving drops to our baby, she left our house,” he said.

He said she again came today and asked them to accompany her to the local gurdwara where her senior was administering polio drops in the second round of the campaign. Qasim said he, along with his wife and baby, went with her, but after reaching the gurdwara, she asked them to go back as her senior was not there. “After that, I went to work following which she again went to my wife and asked her to come to the gurdwara claiming that her senior had arrived,” said Qasim.

After reaching the gurdwara, the kidnapper tricked the child’s mother, asking her to wait for her turn and took away the child on the pretext of clicking his photograph.

“When she didn’t return, my wife got suspicious and raised the alarm,” said Qasim. Inspector Manphul Singh, SHO of the Balongi police station, said they had received a complaint from the parents. He said the police had her photographs. “She will be nabbed soon,” said Manphul Singh, adding that a case had been registered.
