Mohali, December 7

Sleuths of the Special Task Force (STF) arrested a former private bus conductor and a woman drug peddler with 345 gm of heroin, worth Rs 10.50 lakh, from near Connaught Plaza on Airport Road today.

The accused have been identified as Gurpreet Singh, alias Gezza (30), a resident of Dhanauri village, Patiala, and Sweety (34), a resident of Shalimar Colony at Ambala. According to STF officials, Gurpreet Singh got the drug from Sweety for distribution among their clients.

According to the police, Gurpreet Singh and Sweety were working for notorious drug smuggler Manoj Kumar, alias Mamu, who is at present lodged at the Ropar jail.

The STF claimed that Mamu had been running his illegal activities from the jail through the phone. Mamu was recently arrested with 2 kg of heroin from the Kharar bus stand.

“Mamu has connections with drug peddlers in Delhi. He used to give instructions to Sweety and Gurpreet Singh on the phone. Mamu gave the phone numbers of his Delhi-based drug peddlers to Sweety, who bought the drug from them and then as per Mamu’s instructions, the drug was supplied to different clients by Gurpreet Singh,” said the STF officials.

Gurpreet Singh had come in contact with Mamu at the Nabha jail, where the former was lodged in a brawl case.

“In the jail, Mamu induced Gurpreet Singh to work with him to earn easy money,” said the police.

Sweety is also a notorious drug peddler. Her husband, Baldev Singh, along with his two brothers, Manjit Singh and Sukhdev Singh, is already lodged in jail for possessing drugs, said the police, adding that at least three cases had been registered against them there.

A case in this connection has been lodged at the STF police station.

The police said they were trying to locate further links of the drug peddlers in the case.
