Patiala, May 17

The Patiala police have registered a case against 12 persons, eight of them unknown, following the death of 20-year-old Sunny Kumar, a resident of Mansa, who was allegedly done to death using baseball bats and sticks here in Patiala, last week. The police have registered a case pertaining to murder and conspiracy against the victim’s live-in partner and her relatives.

According to the police, victim Sunny was staying with Usha (45) from the past almost a year in Mansa. The woman had claimed that her husband had died a few years back.

“On May 9, Usha’s daughter and son-in-law Sajan came to Mansa and told Sunny that some pension related funds of Usha’s deceased husband were lying in a bank account in Patiala and that Sunny should come to Patiala to claim those funds along with Usha and give it to her son Raju,” reads the FIR.

The police said when Sunny, accompanied by his brother Rajoo, reached Patiala, Sajan, Raju, Shambhu and some other unidentified men allegedly attacked him with baseball bats and sticks. When the victim’s brother, Rajoo, tried to intervene and save his brother, the accused beat him up and injured him as well. “Sunny was later rushed to PGI Chandigarh, where he succumbed to his injuries, following which a case under Section 302 was registered on the statement of the victim’s brother.

The police investigations reveal that the accused did not like Usha staying with Sunny in a live-in relation and, they first took Usha into confidence and hatched a conspiracy to teach Raju a lesson. “Usha was aware that her son and son-in-law were conspiring to attack Sunny on the latter’s visit to Patiala,” said the police.

A case under various Sections of the IPC has been registered against Sajan, Shambhu, Raju and Usha.
