With 30,000 new entrants, city voter count 6.10 lakh

The city has added around 30,000 voters since the last parliamentary elections in 2014, taking the total number of voters to 6,10,328.

The rise in the voter count is reflected in the latest revision of electoral rolls in the Chandigarh parliamentary constituency.

The updated electoral roll has been prepared taking the qualifying date as August 1, 2018. An officer of the Election Department said though the department had prepared the list, the number of voters was likely to increase further as the election date was yet to be announced and the process of voter enrolment was still on.

After seeking objections and new applications, the final list will be published on January 10, 2019.

According to the list, the city has 6,10,328 voters. There is an increase of 29,628 voters over the number recorded in the list prepared for the 2014 parliamentary elections.

There are 3,23,500 male and 2,86,441 female voters. The total figure also includes transgenders.

There are 6,559 voters in the age group of 18 to 19, while there are 1,41,800 voters in the age group of 20 to 29. The number of women voters has also increased significantly this time. As per the data, women constitute close to 47 per cent of the total voter base.

The maximum voters 1,56,665 belong to the age group of 30-39 years, which is around 25 per cent of the total voters. There are 9,182 voters above 80 years of age.

Twelve NRI voters have also been registered. Of them, seven are male, while five are female.
