Chandigarh, July 16

While MC employees have started clearing garbage from Sahaj Safai Kendras in the city, there are some areas where waste is still raising a big stink. The sanitation situation has not improved at the fruit and vegetable market in Sector 26. Today, heaps of garbage were seen there after trucks loaded with waste were returned by the garbage processing plant.

Sumit Kumar, a regular visitor to the mandi, said the stink was unbearable and the market  committee should start sanitation  work on a war footing. Residents of the Police Lines have also been affected by the stink.

Jujhar Singh, chairman of the market committee, said they  had  started  lifting garbage, but since the quantity was huge, it would take some time.

Ram Karan Gupta, a trader, said the fruit and the vegetable market  required a regular sanitation drive. Devinder Singh Babla, Congress councillor, said the MC should make  extra efforts to lift the garbage that had piled up in the city.

MC officials said it would take some days for the situation to normalise after residents of Dadu Majra allowed the plant to throw garbage at the dumping ground. — TNS
