Bhiwani, April 16

Boxer Vikas Krishan has kept his promise made to his grandfather, Ranjeet Singh Yadav, that he would return with a gold medal from the Commonwealth Games (CWG).

Krishan clinched the gold medal when he knocked out Cameroon’s Dieudonne Wilfried Ntsengue in the finals of the men’s 75-kg category. He is posted as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).

At home in Bhiwani, his mother, Darshna Devi, was busy distributing sweets among visitors who came to congratulate the family on Sunday. “Vikas doesn’t like pompous celebrations,” she said. “Before leaving for Gold Coast, Vikas sought blessings from his grandfather. We are happy that his grandfather’s wish has been fulfilled. I will prepare his favourite dish maal poore on his return,” Devi said. Vikas’s father, Krishan Yadav, was happy as his son added to India’s kitty of gold medals. “He has achieved several milestones in Asiad and world championships. He had missed the Commonwealth Games in 2010 and 2014. So, he was keen to win a CWG gold,” he said, adding he had talked to Vikas after the final and he was contend with his performance.

“Vikas will take ten days’ rest after his return. After that, he is likely to head to the US for preparations for Asian Games,” Yadav said.
