Chandigarh, April 21

With no development plan in sight, the land worth crores in Sector 50 has again become the target of encroachers. The Administration had reclaimed the land after carrying out one of the biggest demolition drives in 2013. More than 4,000 people were living on 100 acres.

SS Bhardwaj, president, Chandigarh Social Welfare Council, said in the absence of proper planning, residents of the CHB colony in Sector 51 and societies in the nearby area, have been facing problems. He said the vacant land had become a haven for anti-social elements who roam around freely. Ravi Kumar, another resident of the area, said after reclaiming the land, it was fenced but miscreants damaged it.

Bhardwaj said despite their repeated pleas, no plan had been prepared to secure the land. The unsecured land poses a threat to area residents. Sources said the Administration had planned to develop a commercial area with multi-storey buildings but nothing had been done in this direction so far.

A big market has also been proposed on both side of the Vikas Marg. Kapil Setia, Chief Architect, Chandigarh, said as per the master plan, a major commercial hub had been planned on the land.
