UT gets Rs 123 cr for Smart City projects

Giving a major push to the Smart City projects, the Centre today released Rs 123 crore to the Municipal Corporation. Sources said the administration had decided to launch many projects on June 25, second anniversary of the Smart City mission, with the amount. 

Meanwhile, the administration has also finalised the logo for Smart City Chandigarh which will be visible on every project launched under the mission. Anurag Agarwal, Home Secretary, said a list of projects to be launched on the occasion would be finalised soon. He said the administration had started many projects under the mission 

The sources said the projects, which were likely to be launched on June 25, included the smart parking project of the Municipal Corporation, construction of cycle tracks and new sewerage and storm water lines in villages. 

The foundation stones for two projects related to the rejuvenation of Sector 17 are likely to be laid on the occasion. Besides an urban park, the administration is working on a project to connect Sector 17 with Rose Garden with an underpass 

The administration is also planning to launch electric buses which will be first run on a trial basis. The project management consultants (PMC), Egis International, has set up its office in the MC complex. The PMC has been given work of designing, developing, managing and implementing area-based projects. 

There are approximately 61 projects which are to be carried out by the company. The Chandigarh Administration has registered a special purpose vehicle (SPV), named Chandigarh Smart City Company, for the implementation of the Smart City project in July 2016. The company will plan, appraise, approve, release funds, implement, manage, operate, monitor and evaluate the project.
