UT Administration begins survey for traffic volume on roads

In order to decide the future modes of transport for the city, the Chandigarh Administration has started a survey of traffic volume on the city roads. Sources said the task for the survey had been assigned to SYSTRA MVA Consulting Private Limited under its Smart City project.

Amit Talwar, Director, Transport Department, said the Administration had tied up with the French Government’s entity AFD to make recommendations to ease out the ever-growing menace of traffic. The survey is being carried out under the project.

The findings of the survey will help take decision on the future modes of transport best suited for the city.

Under the project, detailed study on various aspects of traffic problem of the city will be done and recommendations will be made to the Administration.

The consultant will also carry out detailed study of traffic at various roundabouts and the entry points of the city. An officer said the Administration had not taken the final decision on Metro for the city yet and the study would also decide whether the city needed one or not.

Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) also conducted the traffic survey in 2012, but a lot of changes have taken place since then. The RITES report has also been included in the UT Master Plan after several discussions. The survey will also cover the public transport system. Besides, improving the existing fleet capacity of the CTU, rationalisation of routes, provision of proper roadside bus stops and improvement in traffic management at junctions will also be done on the basis of the survey.
