Chandigarh: The police have arrested two vehicle thieves and recovered four stolen motorcycles from their possession. A team of the Maloya police station arrested Gaurav Kumar, a resident of Bijadpur village, Kurukshetra district, and Dinesh, a resident of Dinarpur village, Ambala district, while riding a stolen motorcycle. The accused were arrested from near the Maloya bus stand. Police officials said the motorcycle had a fake number. During verification, it was found that the motorcycle was stolen from Panchkula. A case has been registered against both accused and an investigation initiated. The police said later they recovered three more motorcycles on the disclosure made by the accused. “We are investigating their involvement in other cases of vehicle theft,” said the police. TNS

Purse snatched from woman

Chandigarh: Two motorcycle-borne miscreants snatched a purse containing Rs 15,000 in cash from a 55-year-old schoolteacher in Sector 43 here on Friday afternoon. According to the police, the victim, Paramjeet Kaur, was targeted near her house in Sector 43. The miscreants snatched her purse containing Rs 15,000 in cash, a mobile phone and some important documents. The victim failed to note down the registration number of the motorcycle. Sources said the victim is a teacher at a government school in Sector 37. The police were informed about the incident, following which they reached the spot. The police have gathered the footage of CCTV cameras in which two youths riding a motorcycle were seen. While the motorcycle rider was wearing a helmet, pillion rider was not wearing a helmet. A case has been registered and an investigation initiated.TNS

Conference of librarians

Chandigarh: Over 120 librarians from across the country participated in the 5th national conference on the theme, “Libraries of the Future”. The conference was organised by the Chandigarh Librarians’ Association (CLA) at the Dev Samaj College for Women, Sector 36, here on Friday. The conference was inaugurated by Rakesh Popli, Director, Higher Education, Chandigarh, along with  eminent scholars Prof Jagtar Singh and  Nirmal Singh Dhillon. Dr Agnese Dhillon presided over the inaugural session. On the occasion, an edited volume, titled “Libraries of the Future”, was also released. It contained 49 papers and four posters, contributed by various authors on recent developments and discoveries of library and information centres. TNS

Lecture on energy storage at PU 

Chandigarh: Prof Emeritus Toyoko Imae from Nagoya University, Japan, discussed the issue of energy storage at Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, during the 44th colloquium lecture on “Development of Validated Systems for Energy Production and Storage”. The event was organised by the colloquia committee of the university in collaboration with the Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (UIEAST).  Imae spoke on growing interest in renewable energy as an alternative to bio-fuel and atomic energy, depletion of natural resources and the action to tackle global warming. He expressed views on the development of materials providing high efficiency on solar cells, fuel cells, batteries and illuminations.  She introduced three advanced researches relating to photo-induced enzymatic production of solar fuel, fabrication of electrodes for hydrogen evolution reaction.
