Chandigarh, August 21

In an innovative move to promote cycling and encourage cyclists to use cycle tracks, the UT Traffic Police have constituted their own cycle brigade to sensitise people. Riding bicycles, police personnel will also penalise motorists driving vehicles on cycle tracks.

They will ride across the city and educate cyclists about the benefits of using the cycle tracks. “The move will help promote cycling in the city,” said a police official.

They will don safety gears, including the helmet, and ask other cyclists to follow suit. A police official said vehicles being driven on cycle tracks was rampant in the city and this violation would also be checked by the cycle brigade of the traffic police. “In a bid to avoid traffic snarls, motorists are often seen driving on cycle tracks, especially on Udyog Path,” the police official added.

The brigade would also conduct a road safety audit of the cycle tracks. “They will ride around the cycle tracks and will give a feedback on the changes required in the tracks,” said the police official.
