Chandigarh, june 16

The Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) will now start the process to cancel the allotment of small flats of allottees who failed to pay their rent even after the last date today.

During a special camp, which ended today, an amount of Rs 5.28 crore was deposited. However, a whopping Rs 15 crore is yet to be recovered from defaulters as a large number of the allottees are yet to pay the rent.

The board had issued notices to hundreds of allottees. Officials said from tomorrow, the process to cancel the allotment of houses of defaulters would start. They would also decide tomorrow how they can recover the amount from these defaulters.

According to the CHB, since allottees of small flats did not deposit the dues despite efforts by the authorities in the past, the pending rent arrears have crossed the Rs 20 crore mark. The details of the outstanding dues against each allottee/licensee of small flats as on April 30, 2019, are available on the website of the CHB.

The board had allotted one-room tenements to over 9,000 families living in slums in the city over the years under various rehabilitation schemes at a monthly rent ranging between Rs 200 and Rs 800.
