Teachers’ body seeks pay hike, funds for government-run institutions

In response to the call given by the Punjab Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organisation (PFUCTO), teachers at Punjabi University, Patiala, and government and non-government colleges held a rally in front of the office of the university Vice-Chancellor. 

They also submitted a memorandum to the government through the Vice-Chancellor, in which they demanded the revision of the pay scales in accordance with the notification of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, dated November 2, 2017.

The memorandum also sought an increase in funding for public-funded institutions and the regularisation of 1,925 teachers, appointed in aided colleges in compliance with orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. 

Addressing the rally, Dr Jagwant Singh, general secretary, PFUCTO, said the teachers were not given interim relief as recommendations of the UGC were awaited. 

“Therefore, the government should now do the needful,” he said.  

Prof BS Tohra, president, GCTA, highlighted the problems being faced by teachers of government  colleges and the plight of government colleges in the absence of regular teachers. Prof Balvir Singh, secretary, PCCTU pointed out the due to the policies of the government, salary has not been paid for the past three months and 1,925 teachers appointed on contract were still awaiting the decision of government on regularisation.
