Tanishka survives scare, enters 2nd round

Tanishka opened her campaign with a thrilling win over Aishani in the inaugural match of the inter-school (U-14) cash prize championships here today. Tanishka survived 15-8 12-15 15-14. 

Raissa Bhanot had an easy first-round outing as she drubbed Anushka 15-5 15-4. Shagunpreet tamed Nadar Kaur 15-2 15-1, while Kanishka dismissed Tripjyot Kaur 15-0 15-1. Amulya registered a 15-8 15-8 win over Aastha in her opening match of the championship.

In the boys’ U-14, Dakshmeet started off with a 15-6 15-8 win over Shriyukt. Piyush Chauhan mastered Rohit 15-1 15-0, while Akul Malik drubbed Manan 15-3 15-2. Uday Rana edged out Simar Deep 15-4 15-6.

Ankur School cagers win

Ankur Public School, Sector 14, registered an 18-4 win over St Joseph’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, in the opening match of the basketball competition. 

DC Montessori School, Mani Majra, beat Sri Guru Har Krishan Model School, Sector 38, 22-14, while St Anne’s School, Sector 32, downed Government Model High School (GMHS), Sector 38, 32-16. 

St Peter’s boys drubbed Chitkara International School, Sector 25, 24-8 in the last match of the day.

GHSS-28 spikers shine

Government High Smart School (GHSS), Sector 28, humbled Government Model School (GMS), Sector 26, 25-9 25-19 in the inaugural match of the volleyball championship. 

St Soldier School downed GMS, Kishangarh, 25-14 25-11, while GMH, Sector 34, drubbed Government Mode Senior Secondary School (GMSSS), Sector 56, 25-8 25-6. GMSSS, Kaimbwala, registered a 25-18 25-14 win over GMSSS, Sector 33, and GHS, Sector 52, started their campaign with a 25-14 25-12 win over GMHS, Mani Majra. 

In the handball opener, GMSSS, Sector 19, defeated GMSSS, Sector 23, 6-1.

In another match, GMHS, Sector 20, overcame IS Dev Samaj School, Sector 21, 2-1. 

In the lone kabaddi match of the day, GMHS, Sector 32, defeated GMHS, Mani Majra, by an innings and 11 points.

Earlier, the tournament was inaugurated by Punjab Governor and UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore at the Sector 42 Sports Complex. 

Principal Secretary to Governor JM Balamurugan, Secretary Sports KK Yadav, Director Sports Tejdeep Singh Saini, Joint Director Sports Mahender Singh and District Sports Officer Ravinder Singh also attended the inaugural ceremony.

Badnore, on the occasion, also awarded the players from the state-run academies who had brought laurels to the city.
