Chandigarh, September 13

A day after the Mayor said 12 outsourced employees had been sacked, the safai union claimed that their suspension had been revoked.

“The Commissioner told us that the suspension has been revoked and we can get to work. This is the victory of workers,” Ompal Singh Chawar, general secretary, Safai Karamchari Union.

The union representatives held a meeting with the Municipal Commissioner Baldeo Purushartha in the day. While he couldn’t be reached, Mayor Asha Jaswal said she was not aware of the development as she was out of station. She had also recommended action against 25 regular workers, including two union leaders. Chawar said the Commissioner had told them that no action would be taken.

The MC had also got an FIR registered against three workers who had thrown waste outside the MC’s Medical Officer of Health (MOH) office. The trio was arrested.

President of the local unit of Congress Pardeep Chhabra today criticised the Mayor for sacking them. — TNS
